They have a diverse group of programs to address the needs of the Charlottesville/Albemarle community in an effort to effectively impact as many organizations as possible. In addition to placing their volunteers with service projects benefitting countless non-profits throughout our area, they also raise money to help non-profit community organizations meet immediate community needs. Their league has been serving this area since 1932.

Much like the event we had at the beginning of the school year, the AMA Alliance will be hosting a potluck dinner. Please bring an appetizer, entree, or dessert dish to share with your fellow significant others. If you bring a homemade dish, please bring a copy of the recipe with you. We are collecting recipes for a future cookbook.

This event is casual, and we will be sharing our calendar of upcoming social events (which are ladies only, couples, and kids too).

If you haven't been to any Alliance events since the first dinner, that's okay. Don't be shy, come out for this dinner and see familiar faces and meet some new ones.

Also, if you know any other girls who are the significant other of a med student, resident, fellow, etc at UVA, please invite them to come too!

Melissa Orton- her husband will be doing a transitional year in Roanoke and then they are headed to VCU in Richmond for a radiation oncology residency

Bring your spouse/ significant other and come join us on a HOT date listening to a panel discussion, including Dean Pearson and his wife Janet, and talk from Dr. David Waters about ways and ideas to balance family life and relationships with the demands inherent to a career in medicine. This is a great opportunity to learn more about what to expect from your personal and family life after medical school.

Mini-Med School

Interested in a crash course of medicine? How would you like to earn your medical degree in just 7 weeks? Mini-Med School is a series of lectures that focus on different areas of medicine. It's a great opportunity to learn more about what your significant other does all day in medical school, as well as a chance to learn more about your body and current health issues.

This Spring, Mini Med School will meet on Thursdays at 7:00-9:00pm in Jordan Hall from March 27th through May 8th.

The Holidays are Fast Approaching!

To celebrate the spirit of the season, our group will be having a Christmas Cookie Exchange. Please bake some kind of holiday treat- cookies, cake, pie, candy, bread- and bring your recipe to share with the other UVA Med Wives, Fiancees, and Girlfriends at the party. We will swap treats and recipes with eachother at the party. This way, we can all go home with a plate full of treats and new recipes for future holiday baking. I'm sure our med school significant others will be happy to have some extra treats around the house!

If you don't have a recipe, ask your mother or grandmother for one. It doesn't need to be anything fancy or gourmet! If you aren't able to bake anything, you are still welcome at the holiday party.

The event will be held on Tuesday, December 11th, at 7:30pm.

Run for the Lungs 5K: A Race to Support UVa Cancer Research

Saturday, November 17, 2007
8 a.m. registration, 9 a.m. race time
Start & finish at UVa Bookstore/Newcomb Plaza

This “fun run” loops around the historic University Groundsand adjacent neighborhoods. Serious runners are welcome, along with walkers, families, strollers, and pets.
Entry fee is $12 in advance, $15 on race day.

Money raised will support lung cancer research led by David Jones, M.D., Chief, Division of Thoracic Cardiovascular Surgery, Department of Surgery, and his colleagues in the UVa Cancer Center. Proceeds will be matched dollar-for-dollar by an anonymous donor.

Although it had been rainy all week long, the sun came out in time for our group to enjoy a fun family day at Carter Mountain.

A great day at the orchard was had by all!

An Evening with Dr. Innes and Dr. Innes

Back in September, we spent an evening at the home of Dr. Donald Innes (Pathology) and his wife Dr. Allison Innes (Med School Admissions).

They helped give us information on what to expect from our husbands, fiances, and boyfriends during their time in Med School. We talked a lot about rotations and applying to residency. It was a great opportunity to ask questions about the things we have all been curious about. They also gave us tips on how to have a life together as a married couple outside of medicine. After our conversation, we were treated to a tour of their art collection.

Halloween Party

It's time for the annual UVA Med Halloween Party!

This Saturday night (Oct. 27th) is the Halloween costume party. The party will be held at 1009 Wertland. Drinks and snacks will be provided. There is a charge of $5 to cover the cost of food and drinks. The party will probably be starting around 10:00pm.

Be sure to wear a costume!

Melissa and Matt Orton welcomed Ella Day Orton on September 18th. Ella was 7 lbs and 11 oz and 19 3/4" long.

Danielle and Brandon Webb welcomed Mariah Jolie Webb on October 6th. Mariah was 7 lbs 9 oz and 20" long.

Apple Picking Event!

On Saturday, October 27th, UVA Med Wives will be having a group event at Carter Mountain. Significant others and children are encouraged to come and join the group.

Please meet at the Apple Barn at 10:00am and be ready to enjoy a relaxed day of fall fun!

You can pick apples for 89 cents a pound, go on a hayride ($2 a person), drink an apple cider slushie, eat apple cider donuts, and pick out a pumpkin!

First Annual Bedpan Bowl!

UVA Medical School will host it's first annual "Bedpan Bowl" on Thursday, Novemeber 1st. The game will be played at 10:00pm under the lights at Carr's Hill Field.

What is the Bedpan Bowl? It's a friendly football game between the first and second year students. A small donation ($2-$4) is appreciated. All proceeds from the event will be donated to Camp Holiday Trails, Charlottesville's camp for children with chronic illnesses.

Come out and support your husband if he is playing!

The purpose of this group is to provide emotional and social support and to promote friendship and interaction among medical students and significant others at the University of Virginia School of Medicine.

While the group's name is often abbreviated to "UVA Med Wives," the group is not exclusive to wives of med students as it counts fiancees and girlfriends as members.

Through philanthropic and social events, we will connect as a community. Please check this site frequently to be aware of upcoming events.
